M3 Shepperton Noise Mitigation Works

The M3 motorway is a strategic route approximately 59 miles in length, passing through several counties including Surrey. At Shepperton, the motorway runs in close proximity to residential housing and a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school, creating long-standing concerns around noise pollution. To address these issues and improve quality of life for the local community, targeted noise mitigation works were commissioned along both the eastbound and westbound carriageways.

SRA Swift Trading’s Role: SRA Swift Trading provided site engineering support during the delivery of noise barrier installation works on the M3 at Shepperton. Working alongside Milestone Infrastructure and specialist fencing contractor Littlewood Fencing, SRA supported setting-out, coordination, quality assurance, and compliance activities within a constrained live-highway environment.

Project Details: M3 Shepperton; Surrey

Duration: Milestone Infrastructure

Product Installed: Acoustic Barrier Posts

SRA Swift Trading Role: Site Engineer

The M3 Shepperton noise mitigation works highlight SRA Swift Trading’s capability to provide reliable site engineering support on live highway schemes with complex environmental and ground constraints. Through effective coordination, quality oversight, and technical input, SRA Swift Trading supported the successful delivery of an acoustic barrier solution that significantly improves conditions for the surrounding community.

Scope of Works

  • Provided site engineering support for the installation of acoustic noise barriers along the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the M3.

  • Assisted with setting-out and alignment of barrier posts to ensure compliance with design specifications and highway standards.

  • Liaised with Milestone Infrastructure, Littlewood Fencing, and site operatives to coordinate daily activities and sequencing of works.

  • Monitored installation works to ensure materials and workmanship met specification requirements, including CE-marked barrier components.

  • Supported quality control processes, including inspection of barrier post installation, tolerances, and as-built compliance.

  • Assisted in managing works in challenging ground conditions, including areas affected by 4–4.5 metre roadside ditches and uneven terrain.

  • Maintained awareness of site health, safety, and environmental procedures, contributing to safe working practices on a live motorway.

  • Assisted with site documentation and reporting, including progress updates and as-built information where required.

Safety and Compliance

All works were undertaken in accordance with relevant highway safety standards and site-specific health and safety procedures. Operating adjacent to live traffic required strict adherence to traffic management arrangements, safe systems of work, and clear communication between site teams.

Project Significance

  • The M3 through Shepperton passes directly through a small urban village, creating significant noise impacts for nearby housing estates and an SEN school.

  • Installation of acoustic barriers was critical to reducing noise pollution and improving living and learning conditions for local residents.

  • Approximately 300 metres of acoustic barriers were installed along both carriageways, delivering a long-term noise mitigation solution.

  • The project demonstrates effective collaboration between client, contractor, and specialist suppliers to resolve environmental and community-focused challenges on a live highway.

Environmental Considerations

The primary objective of the scheme was environmental improvement through noise reduction. The installation of CE-marked acoustic barriers supports long-term reduction in noise pollution, helping to improve wellbeing for residents and vulnerable road users within the Shepperton area.

Technical Expertise

  • Accurate setting-out and verification of barrier alignment within constrained highway corridors.

  • Supporting installation methodologies adapted to difficult ground conditions, including bespoke bracing systems where central posts could not be founded.

  • Coordinating with fencing specialists to ensure the engineered solution performed as intended despite uneven terrain and deep roadside ditches.

  • Ensuring construction activities adhered to highway standards, manufacturer specifications, and quality requirements.
